Species: Human
History: Poe is the son of two soldiers of the Alliance to Restore the Republic: Lieutenant Shara Bey (pilot, usually flew an A-Wing in Green Squadron), and Sergeant Kes Dameron (Pathfinders, serving under General Solo). For the first two and a half years of his life he was raised by his maternal grandfather while his parents were away fighting for the rebellion. Six months after the Battle of Endor, his parents mustered out and took him to a ranch on Yavin-4, at which they planted a Force-sensitive tree that Lukey Skywalker had given them. Poe started learning to fly at the age of six, sitting in his mother's lap while she flew her RZ-1 A-Wing interceptor. Shara died only two years later, when Poe was eight, and then it was just him and his father.
Shara never really liked to talk about her time in the rebellion; Kes wasn't quite as recalcitrant, but he preferred to tell stories about his fellow soldiers rather than himself. Poe ultimately learned the most about his parents when he joined the New Republic Starfleet as a pilot and began looking into their personnel records and talking to people who had known them.
Poe rose quickly through the ranks, becoming commander of Rapier Squadron, composed of T-85 X-Wings. While his squadron was stationed at Mirrin Prime, he became aware that the Republic was turning a willfully blind eye toward the depredations of the First Order. After witnessing a first order attack on a freighter called the Yissira Zyde, Poe tried to convince his commanding officer to investigate. When his request was denied, he went out against orders and discovered the freighter had been taken by the First Order. Thinking he was about to get court martialed at best, instead he was debriefed by General Leia Organa and inducted into the Resistance. The rest of his squadron followed him in short order.
In the Resistance, Poe quickly became the commander of the Red, Blue, and Black T-70 X-Wing squadrons. Black Squadron was tapped to take on a covert mission that required them to capture the ship of a traitorous Senator. The information they attained from this capture prompted General Organa to send Poe to the planet Jakku, on another covert mission to contact Lor San Tekka and attain information that would lead to finding Luke Skywalker. He was warned that if he was captured, the Resistance would not be able to rescue him.
Poe was captured on Jakku by Kylo Ren, though not before he gave the data chip he'd gotten from Lor San Tekka to his loyal droid, BB-8. Poe withstood interrogation by the First Order but had the information ripped from his mind by Kylo Ren's Force use. Shortly after, Stormtrooper FN-2187 rescued Poe because he wished to defect from the First Order and needed a pilot. Poe flew them out of the Star Destroyer in a TIE fighter and named his new friend FN-2187 “Finn.” They were shot down and crash landed on Jakku. While Finn was ejected safely, Poe crashed with the ship. He regained consciousness in enough time to escape the ship before it sank into the sand and exploded, but had a concussion and temporary memory loss. When he recovered, he sought to return to the Resistance and gained help from a Jakku native by impressing them with his audacious attitude and piloting skills.
Without much recovery time, he rejoined his squadrons and they were dispatched to Takodana, to fight off an attack by the First Order. Afterward, Poe was reunited with BB-8 and his new friend Finn. Finn told the Resistance about Starkiller base, and the X-wing squadrons were sent to try to destroy the planet-based weapon after its defensive shields were disabled by a small strike team consisting of Chewbacca, Han Solo, and Finn. Explosives laid by the strike team made an opening in the weapon's thermal oscillator, and Poe was able to fly his X-wing inside and destroy it, thus triggering the destruction of the planet.
Upon the destruction of the oscillator, the X-wing fleet was ordered to retreat immediately, but Poe refused to budge until the Millenium Falcon with Finn on board had made its escape. After escorting the Falcon back to D'Qar, Poe left his squadron to celebrate and instead followed badly wounded Finn to the infirmary, though later he was present to see the map leading to Luke Skywalker get completed. He was briefly introduced to Rey before her departure on her own mission.
Personality: Poe learned his skills and his love of flying from his mother, but he's very much his father's son. They have the same open, big-hearted, daring attitude. And more importantly, Kes taught his son to commit to things whole-heartedly. Poe is brash, headstrong, supremely confident, and a bit of a thrillseeker. He's someone who always wants to do what is right, with a bit of adventure along the way. “Dashing” is a good word for him; the pilots under his command like to joke that if they could put him on recruitment posters, he'd triple their numbers. While his pride in his skills can come across as arrogance to people who don't know him, a short conversation tends to clear that up.
Poe is incredibly loyal to his squadron and friends, a loyalty that he tends to favor ahead of his loyalty to first the Republic and then the Resistance. While he's not afraid to send his people into danger when it's necessary, he'd always rather have himself in the line of fire first and protect those under his command. He views his duty as being to the people of the galaxy, fighting to give them room to find hope and peace, rather than to the Republic or his command structure. He seeks adventure but not glory; when the squadron's done well, he does his best to make sure everyone gets due credit and recognition—even cheekily reminding General Organa that his squadron isn't all flyboys, because, “Some of us are flygirls.” He immediately recognizes Finn as “the bravest Stormtrooper... well, ex-trooper” when they meet on D'Qar.
His nature as a thrillseeker means he's likely to get himself in trouble and act incautiously, though he generally tries very hard to make sure he'll be the only one caught in any splashback. This dovetails with the extremely strong sense of personal morality that his parents instilled in him. He's more than willing to disobey orders that he thinks are contrary to what is right—he investigates the disappearance of the freighter after being ordered to not, he ignores General Organa's retreat order until he has all of his people. And he's always ready to face the consequence of these actions head-on, even if it means a court martial or worse. He's the sort of officer who can be a blessing to superiors who know how to handle him, and an absolute nightmare if a battle plan demands that orders be followed without question.
Looking at his interactions with Finn, Poe's big-hearted nature and willingness to trust are evident. He doesn't make Finn prove himself, and he doesn't judge the Stormtrooper for wanting to run or rescuing him because he needs a pilot. He accepts the man at face value and throws himself into escape like it's another adventure that they're on together. Poe believes the best in people and is rarely disappointed. He immediately tells Finn to keep his trademark coat when they meet again, and while part of that might be Finn looks damn good wearing it, Poe is likely also cognizant that this is the first thing Finn has ever owned.
When he's not in his sphere of greatest competence—piloting--Poe can be surprisingly dorky. Upon meeting General Organa, he became tongue-tied with hero worship, though once he became more comfortable around her, he gets downright cheeky. He's also renowned as an absolutely terrible liar by anyone who has served with him, which he would claim isn't true.
Abilities:
Poe is, hands-down, the best and most daring pilot of the Resistance. General Organa compares him favorably to her brother Luke, which is even more impressive since Poe doesn't seem to be Force sensitive. He's been piloting since he was six years old and learned in an A-Wing; he's got a need for speed, it's fair to say. He claims that he can fly anything, and so far in his canon he hasn't run across a ship that he couldn't fly, and extremely well.
Poe is competent on the ground; he does a pretty decent showing for himself when he's up against the First Order with only a blaster, at least until Kylo Ren puts the Force whammy on him. He can also speak binary without needing it to be translated.
